Notre Dame Dominates

Spring is in the air... What comes to mind, you ask? Well, the smells...of course! Battery acid dripping from a sea of "N" size batteries; coney island chili dogs; 15-20 people tightly packed together in a garage; nitrous-oxide somewhere in the vicinity of the Commissioner's fleet. Yes, the smell of a Casper Race.

The (now) second race of the year is in the books. And the winner is...The Commissioner. Again. Can you say, "Budweiser"?

Yes, it was the 1964 Notre Dame of Hank Kosciuszko's that dominated the fleet. The Notre Dame was the fastest qualifier and won all heats. The Final Heat looked to be a good one as Doug Miller's Maverick had the inside lane at the start with the remaining boats in the heaat all having perfect 800 point days. But, the Notre Dame took off from Lane 2 and never looked back. One of the surprise boats of the day was the Tahoe Miss. Beginning the day at 35-1 odds, the Tahoe ran very strong and finished second. Thunderbolt finished third, Scott Dunn's Mariner Too finished fourth and Mark Miller's Maverick finished fifth.

Brad Dunn's Miss Madison claimed it's 6th consolation race win.

Hard luck winner was Kathy Shuler's Miss Madison. The Madison is one of the fastest hulls in the fleet, but scored a DNF in the first heat of the day. Dave Crockenburg's fast running and newly repainted "Miss Detroit" also scored DNF's.

New boats included Doug Miller's Such Crust IV which ran strong all day, scoring a victory in Heat 2B. Jim Dunn's new My Cupiee also scored it's first heat win in Heat 2H. Jim gets a special award for driving to and from Fort Wayne, Indiana on Saturday on a weekend where gas prices are at an all time high! Now that's stupidity...er, dedication!

MANY, many thanks to Mark Weber and Mark Miller for the great hospitality and for making executive decisions ("We're racing this weekend at this time...be there.")
