First Test Session in 2001 Season
Sun-shiny weather highlighted a spirited, celebrity-filled (Mark Weber was there) event as the Casper-Detroit series kicked off the 2001 season with a test session at Lake Kosciuszko.
Two big stories developed from this event. First...the turns. George Schulz, former President of Unlimiteds Detroit, presented us with a design second to none. The portable turns, with deluxe carrying case, neatly fit into Lake Kosciuszkos turns and vaulted the Casper-Detroit series into a new era. Last years National High-Point Champion Tahoe Miss was the first hull to test the waters. The turns performed beautifully as Tahoe Miss gracefully entered and exited the first corners. All the competitors looked at each other with glee, as they knew they had just witnessed something very special.
The second story of the day was that of a young man from St. Clair Shores. That young man is Scott Dunn. Even though this was a test session, it was decided that there would be an exhibition race. That decision would haunt the rest of the Casper-Detroit competitors as Scott promptly took his hulls and swept the podium finishes. A 1-2-3 finish for fourth grader. For Scott, though, it seemed to be just "another day at the races." When asked about his victory, he said, "It was great. Are we having Little Caesers Pizza for dinner tonight?"
The Casper-Detroit series welcomed three new competitors and four new boats. Tom Netschke brought his beautiful new U-60 Miss Thriftway. Even though we all hate Miss Thriftway, we decided that it was OK to let Tom race. George Schulz, famous to the Casper Series as a guest illegal starter in 2000, brought his brand-spanking new U-25 Miss Spokane. Randy Roe presented his cool blue and mahogany Nitrogen Too. The rammin' and bammin' Too tested very well, with Randy testing various setups throughout the day. Jeff Dunn brought his newest addition to the Dunn fleet, the
$ Bill. All four boats very impressive and look to be top-notch contenders for the 2001 season. George Schulz did encounter some propeller problems, losing his propeller twice during the exhibition race. Of course the beauty of this kind of racing is that George simply reached in and picked the prop off the bottom of Lake Kosciuszko and glued it on again.
