Miss Spokane Wins 2001 Opener
In a thrilling duo in the Final Heat, the Miss Spokane came from behind on the last lap to beat the water-drenched Mariner Too to take the season-opening Icebreaker Regatta. A fleet of 19 Casper Models arrived at Lake Kosciuszko in Harper Woods for the first race on the newly-formed Casper-Prop ("PROP" stands for "Pathetic, Ridiculous, Old Poops") circuit.
Many beer-drinkers braved the tornado-like weather and were treated to a hair-raising Final heat. It was a Bardahl-Final Heat, but the Mariner Too and Miss Spokane were slicker (sorry..) The Mariner Too hugged the inside buoy-line and made it through the first-corner cleanly - which was no small feat on this day. However, the Mariner Too went up on it's side through several corners each time taking on water. George "no-longer trailer" Schulz commanded his Miss Spokane (as much as you can "command" a plastic boat running "N"-sized batteries without a rudder) down Lake Kosciuszko at a steady pace. But, Mariner Too had the inside lane and would not give it up. Finally, the Spokane shot past the Mariner Too with a half a lap to go and came home a winner! The day also "featured" 10 boats scoring DNF's - a dubious record for the Casper-Prop series. A big surprise was the outstanding performance of Mike Millenbach's Checkerboard Bardahl, posting two heat victories in their first outing. And, of course, we all booed the Miss Thriftway (no offense, Tom...it's one of the rules), broke propellers and used plenty of duct tape. A great day!
