Mariner Too Wins First of Double-Header

It was a day of choices. Lays potato chips vs. Better Made, Miller Lite vs. Budweiser or Labatt Blue, single-stage motor vs. two-stage motor, One Regatta vs. Two Regattas. Not sure about the food and beverage, but Hank left the two-stage motor on the bench and we decided to emulate the great Chicago Cub Ernie Banks by saying, "Let's Race Two!"

More new boats were on hand for the day. Randy Roe brought his new Smirnoff, the 1966 version, and had a great debut, winning an elimination heat...no small feat..with a real tough fleet...do I need to repeat? Mark Weber brought his new Blue Chip, sans lettering (his sign painter - me - was unavailable for service.) Mark just can't seem to get away from those yellow boats! Master builder Hank Kosciuszko revamped Jeff Dunn's $ Bill (looks really cool.) We even had a guest appearance by the Miss Pepsi, which ran very well!

"Finally. Mariner Too finished the Final Heat". That was Scott Dunn's words after winning the Final Heat in the first race of the day. The Mariner Too has a history of running well, making the final heat, then sinking. Not on this day. Mariner Too was dogged by second place finisher Miss Bardahl (1963) and Mike Millenbach's High-Point leader Miss Bardahl (1968). Hank Kosciuszko's Gale V and Greg Bazydlo's Miss Bardahl (1966) ran strong all day and placed 4th and 5th in the Final Heat.

A few other interesting things happened on this day.

  • The weather, though providing a small amount of rain during the day, was really nice! Not exactly you model Frostbite Regatta weather.
  • Miss Thriftway was the top qualifier in the Frostbite and there were not that many "boos" from the crowd. Maybe your boat is finally being accepted, Tom.
  • Thunderbolt actually lead a lap
  • We had three boats with no decals and four boats with destroyed decals.
  • Racer Bob Dabrowski offered to pay real prize money for the second race...at least that was the rumor.

Check out the story and stats for race two, the Racer Bob Challenge Cup.

Another great day of racing with the Casper-Prop series.

Story for the Racer Bob Challenge Cup (Race two) coming soon!
